Mindset Training for Her

Building a young woman’s confidence now benefits her for life.

I help teenage female basketball players build their self-confidence, grit, and peace of mind, on and off the court with my 9 week 1-on-1 training program “Hoops Magic: Mindset Training for Her.”

Studies have shown that young women who continue to play sports throughout their high school career build greater lifelong confidence, have better health outcomes, and are greater contributers in their communities. My mission is to train teenage female basketball players in developing unshakeable confidence, grit, and self-love, so they can get the most out of their athletic experience.

Mindset is a muscle that needs training too!

All great athletes know physical fitness only takes you so far. To get to the next level, you have to work on mental fitness.

“Hoops Magic: Mindset Training for Her” is a 9-week mental fitness program for teenage basketball players. Together we’ll design a mindset training routine that helps your teen athlete build confidence during the most formative years of her life. Whether she dreams of going pro or of becoming her own boss one day, the tools and techniques we practice together will deliver a lasting impact for young women on and off the court. 

Forget perfectionism, and let’s focus on growth.

Teenage girls are dangerously bombarded with visual concepts of what “perfect” looks like, from models and influencers to competitive athletes on social media. Many girls believe they have to be “perfect” in order to accomplish their goals. But it’s been proven that people who believe in “being perfect” simply don’t go as far in life.

In 9 weeks, your teenager (and you) will be equipped with techniques that help her develop a growth mindset. We’ll do away with perfectionism and comparing herself to others so that she walks away from this program with a toolbox that helps her succeed for the rest of her life. I’ll conduct 1-on-1 sessions with your teen, and invite adults to join some of those sessions, so you can fully support her journey.

Teamwork really makes the dream work.

  • We’ll start by getting to know each other, setting goals, and creating a safe space for her to design her mindset routine.

  • She’ll start learning about her inner critic, and begin practicing mindfulness techniques to cultivate presence in the moment.

  • Together we’ll explore healthy communication practices with coaches, teammates and others so she can advocate for herself as an athlete.

  • She’ll share about her role models and inspiration in this session. We’ll develop a unique new way for her to relate to those people as part of her routine.

  • We’ll dive into her relationship with social/online media, and the impacts is has on her perception of being a young woman.

  • In this session, we discuss the unique challenges female athletes face that are rarely spoken about out loud in the sports world, and we’ll explore how to navigate those challenges.

  • This is the week when we review what she’s learned so far, check progress on her goals, and make adjustments to her mental fitness program.

  • She’ll walk away from this session having renegotiated her relationship to “failure” and creating a new framework for continuous growth.

  • Parents/guardians are invited to join this session, as we review everything we learned and set your athlete up for continued success after she completes the program.

Meet Your Coach

Tara Ali-Khan is a former industrial designer turned mindset coach. She’s worked as a design researcher and strategist for clients like IKEA, Walmart, and Magic Leap. Outside of work, Tara mentored a FIRST Robotics Competition team, which is where she discovered her affinity for working with high schoolers. She worked with dedicated high schoolers teaching them design thinking, marketing, web design, and enhanced communications techniques. She’s also been trained as a communications coach, and finds the most fulfillment working with clients in a 1-on-1 environment.

Basketball is Tara’s favorite thing to connect over. She’s a proud New York Liberty fan, hosts an annual tournament for players of all skill levels, and plays as often as she can.

Teenage girls face many challenges that threaten their relationship to their sport and sticking with it. But we know that if she wants to play, sticking with it will benefit her for life. Supporting your daughter in getting through the tough times can have impacts that reach far beyond her high school career.

Physical Health

Girls who play sports throughout high school have a reduced risk of chronic illness, obesity, and lower risk of breast cancer by up to 60%. They experience more regular menstrual cycles, and develop stronger bones, preventing osteoporosis in the future.

Emotional Regulation

Sports provide a safe emotional outlet for girls that they may not have otherwise. And regular exercise fills developing teen brains with endorphins and other chemicals to help reduce stress and promote sleep.

Academics

Teens who are involved with sports tend to show better time management skills and are better organized. They have also been shown to participate more in math and science courses–areas where girls have historically not gotten enough attention.

Professional Boost

Ernst & Young conducted reseearch showing that 94% of women executives participated in sports growing up, and still did in their adulthood, and. found that the qualities girls develop from playing organized sports sets them up for more success in the business world.

Community Oriented

Studies have shown that girls who play sports tend to be more community oriented, and they learn how to play specific roles as part of a larger ecosystem in the way that teams are structured.

Overall Life Outcomes

When girls develop a healthy relationship to their sport, they learn to care for their bodies at an earlier age, and learn the benefits of being physically active for life. They are more likely to remain active as they grow older.
